Office betting pools are not too uncommon, but that might not mean you should participate.
Cons of the office betting pool:
- Depending on company policy, you could land in hot water, big time.
- Some people have very real and serious gambling issues. If an individual is working on their issue, they shouldn’t have to be exposed to gambling at work. Especially, if it wasn’t in the contract when they signed on.
- Shouldn't you be working? Betting and discussing bets takes away from the original purpose of work, which is, yup, work.
- If you have enough time to organize betting pools at work, how does that look to upper management?
- It's illegal. Although it's unlikely you'd be prosecuted for participating - still it is really illegal.
Pros of the office betting pool:
Personally, I'm not a fan of gambling in any form. I've seen too many people consumed who ruin major aspects of their life with gambling. That said, I tried to think of some pros.
- Might be a successful morale builder. Possibly a team building exercise, if everyone is into it.
- Offers fun and a break from the everyday office routing. This may in turn increase productivity.
