Last Minute Organizing for Taxes

April 15th is just about here. Seriously, April will fly by people.  If you're behind then it's time to jump on those taxes and get going. If you're not a pro, it may even be time to consider hiring some help. You do not want to be trying to figure out what's deductible and what's not at the last second all on your own.

If you need some help then following are some helpful links

Organizing for Tax Season

17 Great Tax Filing Resources

The links above are what you should have used back in the day. Say, oh January or so. However, there's still some info you can use in each to get you up to speed. The Ernst & Young Tax Guide puts out some decent last minute tips each year as tax season starts to wind down, and 2008 is no exception. Some tips from their press release:

  1. "Always check your math.
  2. Include your Social Security number on each page of the return so if a page is misplaced by the IRS, it can be reattached to the correct area.
  3. If you are married, check to see if filing separate returns rather than a joint return is more beneficial.
  4. Be sure to sign your check and write your Social Security number, the form number and the tax year on the face of any checks made out to the U.S. Department of Treasury.
  5. If you have worked for more than one employer, be sure to claim a credit for any overpaid Social Security taxes withheld from your wages.
  6. Don't miss deadlines. Not only is April 15th the deadline to make a contribution to your IRA, but also to file your tax return (or request an extension)."

tax bookYou can still pick up the The Ernst & Young Tax Guide 2008, which is chock full of tax tips or visit their website to keep up to date on tax topics.
