A new poll by Harris Interactive is showing that while most Americans say that they have gone green at home, only half try to be greener at work.
About 93% of people said they turn off lights, the computer, and other items to conserve energy at home, but don't do the same when they leave work. Only 50% said they conserve at work. I think the numbers sound screwy no matter what. With all the energy drains on the planet that are proven, I highly doubt 93% of us are doing so well at home. However, I suppose that's another issue.
The key is likely that a majority noted that they turn off lights at home to save money, not because it's a green way to live. Obviously, most people don't pay their business office electric bills so why bother.
According to one article which quotes Eric Buntin, spokesman for the company who conducted the poll, "The survey suggests that while most employees want their employers to offer environmental initiatives at work, they do not always take part in programs or initiatives that are available."
Solutions may include better green programs and goals at work, and maybe some sort of reward system. It seems people going green, at least from this poll, like immediate rewards, not the long term benefits that going green can offer.
Possibly a push to show employees that cost efficiency affects payroll might work. Another idea is automated light and network systems that shut down independently; although of course that raises immediate costs.
