The new issue of Target Marketing Magazine has a really nice article about competitive, yet, budget-minded marketing for businesses.
It’s a great read for smaller companies and offices that need to market, but don’t have the large marketing budget. The article did get me thinking about how there are actually some perks to being the little guy in a world of big-time marketing efforts.
People can relate: Many of your customers and clients can relate to being in the position of needing to save money, and still being able to be known in your niche. Lack of funds is frustrating, sure. It’s also more normal, more down-to-earth, and more approachable.
Better planning: When I’ve worked for smaller companies, such as non-profits, I’ve seen that there tends to be fewer poor marketing choices than when I’ve worked for place that have cash to spare. I think that this is because you honestly can’t afford the mistake. You think things through better. If you don’t there goes your entire budget.
The Target Marketing article mentions some of the ways you can market big, even on a small budget. Most are great ideas, I think. Here are two ideas – you can see the rest at the magazine’s website.
Blogs: Blogs can be a stellar marketing tool. If you use a system like WordPress.com you can even market for free. Although, I suggest that you go with WordPress.org, for a company or office blog. Your own domain and hosting will cost very little. A blog gives you room to seduce clients, provide information, and promote. For free or less than $1,200 a year – you can’t beat that.
Hook up with social media: Social media sites like Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and more, may seem very, “teenage style” but seriously, everyone is on some sort of social networking site now-a-days. Consumers (your clients) are spending more time on these sites as well. It’s another free way to reach people.
What other options can you think of that allow you to market your personal business on a budget?
