As the air turns chilly our thoughts turn to cozy sweaters, the holiday spices, crisp snowy days, and best of all taxes.
Ok, so no one thinks that taxes are the best fun of the season but they don't have to take the fun out of the season. If you can feel the tax anxiety building up then relax... get started with your research and planning early this year. Whether you work at a big huge company, a mid sized office, or run your own business from one desk and a phone you'll have to deal with taxes at some point soon.
Here are 17 great resources that can help you to prepare and still leave you relaxed enough to enjoy the holidays.
- Site number one of course is the Internal Revenue Service. Yikes this site is busy but helpful -- what's smart is to start visiting soon so you know your way around. Although crowded the main IRS site does offer so much useful help like forms, advice, online filing tools, how to find a great (and for real) tax accountant, and alerts on tax email scams.
- It's always a tax bonanza at Tax Girl and the news is never dull but delivered in a way that makes you actually like taxes (sort of at least) tax news, tax info and tax policy and so much more you need to know.
- File for free! If you earned $54,000 or less in 2007, you can use Free File to prepare your taxes online beginning in mid-January 2008. Many sites offer free filing but this is where you should start because it's the actual IRS gateway to free filing.
- Find out how much you'll owe before you file with multiple tax calculators.
- More small business and self employment tax links then I've ever seen before.
- Got freelancing issues? Learn all about 20 tax deductions for freelancers at Freelance Writing Jobs.
- Need software? Confused about how to even start looking. Read reviews of popular tax software so you choose the one right for you.
- About.com's Tax Planning site is a good one; covering all aspects of taxes and there's a handy forum where you can ask questions, connect with others, and just chill with people who aren't afraid to talk tax.
- Tax information that relates to retirement -- hopefully this is on your horizon at least some day. Maybe not soon but why not make some plans.
- The Kiplinger Tax Center which includes useful items like, The 13 Most Overlooked Tax Deductions, The Kiplinger Taxopedia, and a handy Ask the Tax Experts area.
- NOLO Press offers useful information on a variety of business topics including taxes. I always feel better and more in the know after using NOLO resources. Maybe you will too.
- 6 secrets tax pros won't share.
- Learn more than you probably want to know at the Office of Tax Policy.
