Earlier today Google announced their new free cell phone software package that’s in development. The Google "software stack" won't be available until late 2008 but I suppose that gives people a chance to consider if this is going to make their workday more productive or much less so. For one thing it’s free yes but Google won’t even be turning out phones. Instead they’ve partnered with four different cell phone manufacturers (Motorola, Samsung Electronics Co., HTC and LG Electronics Inc.) who will use the programs in their own phones. Just a hunch but I assume the catch will be more expensive phones and or services plus a slice of tricky contracts.
Still, the Google claim is that their software will make smart phones less expensive since manufacturers won't have to pay for software. That would be benefit number one if your office goes with the Google plan. If it’s true.
If you want to really get down to the nitty gritty of cost effectiveness I’d rather pay more for a phone that won’t be riddled with advertising because frankly, that’s a waste of my already sucked dry time. According to The Wall Street Journal online, Google does plan to bundle advertisements with its search engine, e-mail and Web browser software applications.
Already internet use tops the charts every time there’s a new survey about time wasting at the office so I hardly think employers will be eager to jump on this bandwagon – at least in theory. The other side of that is that everyone (office places included) seem to want the newest toys so… What’s your guess?
Any perks?:The news has not actually said all that much about perks (in my opinion) but one perk will be better customization and these phones will likely at least improve the mobile web market because competitors will want to be bigger and better than Google.
Right now there are so few details that I’ve sort of lost interest. Considering this was just announced yesterday that’s semi-problematic. Looking around the web mostly what you’re seeing are theories and not much of, “This will benefit me how?” information. I guess it’s easy enough to access the web by now; it’s easy to snap up the perfect phone for work or personal use; and it’s all a bit dull. I’m way more interested in when Sharpie will come out with more new colors or innovations in printer paper. I kid you not. Not to mention the fact that I already think we’re over inundated with tech (and ads) as it is… but that’s my deal and another story. So, what about you? Excited, not thrilled, could care less? Let me know.
See what other Know More Media bloggers are saying; and I promise many of them are way more interested in the Google phone than I am, so if that’s your side of the fence the following are great reads:

Jennifer I think I like the idea of the Google software more than anything. But I sort of agree with you in terms of not wanting to give anyone another place to advertise to me. Currently, I have mobile GMail and there's no advertising and I like it that way. And I think when there are too many customization options, a phone that was supposed to help increase productivity just becomes another gadget that may not benefit you at all. How about just a phone?(she says sending this comment from her blackberry) LOL :-)
