Don’t “Green Trap” Your Office

If your workplace is trying to go green to win clients the new warning is that you better be able to backup your green priority speeches and PR with action or you may be facing a world of hurt.

BBMG is a branding and integrated marketing agency dedicated to helping socially-minded organizations and they recently came out with their inaugural BBMG Conscious Consumer Report. The report is from the first major study combining field observations with a national survey on purchasing behavior and social values. The results; consumers want companies that talk green to be held accountable by their actions.

Some findings from the study that can help your business thrive include:

  • Almost nine in ten consumers use the words, "conscious consumer" to describe themselves and 90% note that they are far more likely to buy from an eco-savvy company than another less green-minded competitor.
  • A range of 88% - 87% of consumers say that they are more likely to do business with companies that promote: health and safety, fair trade, and a commitment to eco-friendly practices.
  • Consumers are more concerned about eco-issues that affect their health such as clean air or water vs. issues like global warming. (Although the two almost go hand in hand).
  • Although consumers want eco-friendly services and products the report found that price and quality still are more important overall to consumers.

For instance while many consumers call themselves, "conscious consumers" - "environmentally-friendly" – and "socially responsible" only a bit over half self-identify as "green" because “green” is considered more exclusive. So while “green” is the new black your business may be better off using terms consumers can relate to.

According to Raphael Bemporad, founding partner of BBMG, the final word is, "In a world of green clutter, conscious consumers expect companies to do more than make eco-friendly claims. They demand transparency and accountability across every level of business practice. Avoiding the green trap means authentically backing your words with socially responsible actions."

Following the issues covered in this report can allow your business to go green and make some green at the same time. It's a win-win situation.
