I love a good blogging event and I love green topics so it’s tough to come right out and say there are issues with Blog Action Day – but there are.
First I’m thrilled that so many (over 15,000) signed up for this event but sort of shocked that more didn’t. There’s a great many more bloggers in the world than 15,000 – where are they?
The biggest issue with this whole event is that we should think about the environment every day not just on special occasions.
How we live and work is so intertwined with the environment and our impact on it that you can’t separate the two. Yet events like this break it down and make the reality of green living an event removed from the everyday – that’s not ok.
Luckily there are upsides to Blog Action Day. One, hello, blog event – blogging is about community. If you don’t have community why blog? Events like this allow huge groups of bloggers and blog readers to communicate together.
Also, it is for a good cause and while yes, we should not separate the environment into an event; there are at least a few people out there who will see a post by a blogger who usually blogs about business, music, or cookies and their minds will change. They will consider something new, consider green technology, and consider what they can do. Even just one person newly thinking about their footprints on the planet because of this day is all it takes to make Blog Action Day a success. One person; one idea; can start a chain reaction that lasts forever.
Keeping green topics alive all the time and not just on one day is something I try to do at all my blogs and here especially because we spend a lot of time at work. Work is the perfect place to start getting green.
That said, I pulled up past Office Stuffer green-minded posts that you might enjoy.
