I’m pretty good at interviews. I was racking my brain trying to think about when (if) I made a mistake and it was tough. But I remembered one. I was interviewing for a new on-going writing gig and the editor asked, “What magazines have you written for?” So, I completely forgot the name of one of the magazines – plus I stammered around trying to remember.
That’s not all that bad. In a recent Ask Annie column post there were 10 HUGE interview mistakes listed. The list was complied by Accountemps, who asked some hiring managers what the wackiest things they’ve ever heard have been.
My favorites include:
- "...told me she wanted the position because she wanted to get away from working with people."
- "...brought his mother to the interview and let her do all the talking."
- "... explained that he had no relevant experience for the job he was interviewing for, but his friend did."
- "... drafted a press release announcing that we had hired him."
You can see the rest of the dumb things people say and do while interviewing at Ask Annie. On the other hand if you’d like some interview skills that won’t get you laughed out of the hiring office try this page on Winning Interview Skills.
