Best Cities for Job Seekers

A few days ago Forbes magazine released their top cities for Job seekers in 2007 list. It seems objective enough. They used a variety of data points including unemployment rates, job growth, income growth, household incomes, and cost of living from 2006. This system was used to evaluate the top 100 metro areas (size wise) that are offered by the U.S. Census Bureau.

right_there.jpgBasically if your dream job opening comes up in say, Eugene, OR and they aren’t on the list go ahead and still apply because we all know these sort of lists aren’t set in stone. However, if you’re currently looking or thinking of looking for new work and you have the means to do so it can’t hurt to job search in a city where your odds are increased.

Obviously hitting the top ten cities is the very best plan. So long as you get there before everyone else who reads the Forbes report.

The top five places to look for work include:

  1. Salt Lake City, UT
  2. Raleigh, N.C.
  3. Phoenix, AZ
  4. Jacksonville, Fla
  5. Orlando, Fla.

See the other top ten here.

The only place in the top five where I’d actually move would be Salt Lake City – if they had better drivers. Seriously every time I go there I almost die on the freeway. But I’ve visited a lot and it is beautiful there and there are so many outdoor activities. It also has a very clean metro area which is nice. The rest are either too brown or too humid or just plain too Florida for me.

What about you? Would you pack up and move somewhere based on a list that says jobs are plentiful?
