If you work in an office setting and happen to be in charge of hiring or screening or hiring the screening company for your office site there’s some news you should know.
In August workplace violence expert W. Barry Nixon released two cool items; one a list of 10 top factors to consider when selecting a background screening firm from his own research and two his site PreemploymentDirectory.com, released a brand new comprehensive guide for Human Resource Managers regarding how to choose a background screening firm.
To say Nixon is the expert in workplace violence may be an understatement. Most people obsessed or involved with workplace safety know his name. Nixon is the Executive Director, for the National Institute for Prevention of Workplace Violence, Inc. and has spent years educating the public about workplace violence. He is the safety guy you’d brag about hearing speak (ok, I would but then I am obsessed with workplace safety).
You may think that the hiring process is less consequential to workplace violence than training the staff you have but that’s not entirely true. Great background checks on future employees do add extra protection for your workplace because some of the bad seeds are eliminated before they might step into your office setting.
According to Nixon’s research here are some of the primary factors to consider regarding a great background screening company:
“Certifies that criminal background checks are conducted on all permanent and temporary staff. - Certifies that all information sent to clients will comply with applicable federal, state and local privacy, EEO, consumer reporting, etc. laws.
- Fully explains limitations of National Databases to clients.
- Has the capability to interface and/or to integrate with the client's HR information system(s).
- Have specific procedures in place to shield client from receiving 'protected information' or information that might expose the client to legal liability.”
