What Can the Juanita Bynum Assault Teach Office Workers

You've likely heard about the recent assault of televangelist and best-selling author Juanita Bynum. If you haven’t the basics include Bynum, an Atlanta hotel parking lot, and Bishop Thomas W. Weeks III (her estranged husband). Weeks attacked Bynum leaving her pretty battered.

Bynum with her connection to God, her women empowerment stance combined with her successful "No More Sheets" sermons and video is the last person one would think would be attacked. What this shows everyone is that no one is safe from assault. In this case the form of abuse is domestic violence but as an office worker consider these workplace violence statistics:

  • In the 80s occupational homicide was the third leading cause of occupational death in the U.S.
  • By 1992 occupational homicide took over the number one spot.
  • One out of each four U.S workers will be attacked, harassed, threatened, or be involved in another violent altercation sometime during their life.
  • By 2004 new statistic showed that one worker dies each week and 25 are seriously injured due to workplace violence.
  • Your manager is probably not prepared to handle workplace violence.

survivingThe Bureau of Labor Statistics, Department of Labor recent survey shows that you’re more at risk working for a company with fewer than 300 workers; the smaller the company, the less likely they are to have a workplace violence prevention program in place.

*Other risks to workers according to previous research include:

  • Contact with the public
  • Exchange of money
  • Delivery of passengers, goods, or services
  • Having a mobile workplace such as a taxicab or police cruiser
  • Working with unstable or volatile persons in health care, social service, or criminal justice settings
  • Working alone or in small numbers
  • Working late at night or during early morning hours
  • Working in high-crime areas
  • Guarding valuable property or possessions
  • Working in community-based settings

No one is safe. Not if you’re a well known and God heeding woman like Bynum, not if you make more money, and not if you feel safe. To start learning more visit OSHA workplace violence resources

Later I’ll be back with some workplace violence prevention resources for office workers that can help increase your odds of getting seriously hurt at the workplace.

Until then, why not see what some of my business minded pals have to say about this whole Juanita Bynum situation.

Shannon; there are so many people doing good work who no one hears of. What about all the Big Brother / Big Sister volunteers, or people who do the mailings for race for the cure? What about people simply raising their children to be productive and kind citizens?

There are many unspoken heroes among us. When something does happen that harms another human it's a huge shame but if you look at the other side maybe this will make people more aware of violence, domestic violence, and increase prevention tactics. Really in a situation like this, all you can do is look for the change it may inspire. Thanks for stopping by.
