Stop what you're doing right now! Take a look around your office. Do you like what you see? Are you doing what you love?
I hope you said yes. I adore a good story of someone who loves their job.
But if you just got real depressed; or maybe you already were, it could be time for a change of scene. I was thinking about this because today U.S. News and World report released their ever inspiring yearly college rankings. If you were in the room that would have sounded like sarcasm.
Don't get me wrong; I used to be into the college rankings too. Did I base my college choice on them. Not really. But that's a much longer story. My point, with so many employers now paying for employees to return to school it can seem like a pretty sweet deal. It's not always. You have to consider a few things:
- How much tuition will your employer actually cover (are books included)?
- How much time do you want to spend away from your family or free time -- assuming you already work a 40 or more hour week.
- What's the real gain?
- Is the real gain better if I choose one of the handy top U.S. News and World schools?
According to some sources real life experience and on-the-job training can have a bigger or at least as big return as college attendance; even top college attendance.
CNN has a list based on information gathered from the U.S. Department of Labor and the Census Bureau. Following are some jobs you can do without even a four year degree:
Annual income: $102,030
· Storage and distribution manager
Annual income: $66,600
· Transportation manager
Annual income: $66,600

Annual income: $58,920

My advice; skip the extra college. Spend the time with your family instead. Make sure you tell your boss that you're interested in in-house trainings and extra hands on experience if you're thinking of switching jobs tell new employers the same. Lists; especially top college lists make college look, well, list worthy and important. But nothing is more important then staying happy and finding something you love to do for a living.
