First, sorry about the lack of posts yesterday folks; summer allergies are kicking my butt. But I got some allergy medicine and all kinds of great office news. Starting with boobs. That's right. Breasts in the office. Which frankly, was not my first plan of the morning.
Globe Life, a Canadian newspaper, had an interesting headline on Monday, "Don't Be the Office Boob" -- I was thinking it would be a heartwarming piece on funny co-workers getting into scraps.
It was not.
Turns out, that going braless or, as the article reports, "Playing up the puppies" can make your co-workers uncomfortable.
Furthermore Toronto bra and breast expert, Liliana Mann, points out that, "I don't think you want your bosses to notice your boobs; I think you want your bosses to notice your brain."
Really! Thanks for the head's up. I'm wondering about a couple of things.
- Office air conditioning tends to run ice cold all summer long which is actually not the best for keeping breasts un-perky. Seriously, every office I've ever worked in is freezing in the summer -- is yours? Should women wear fur coats to work in the summer or be forced to take an extra outfit and change in the office bathroom each day when they arrive and then again when they leave? What about lunch time?
- Statistically speaking, women continue to make less at the office than men and hold fewer corporate positions. Yet this article suggests that women go to all sort of lengths to keep their breast / nipples hidden up to and including spending extra money on items like nipple shields, camisoles and sport tanks.
- Studies also show that more attractive folks get job perks, promotions, and make more money.
So, which message should female office workers listen to?
- Sexy = good for the job.
- Sexy = not ok.
I think it's a bit lame that women should even be expected to care if they make others uncomfortable at the office because they have breasts. I bet women are uncomfortable with lower wages and the glass ceiling. Maybe we can make a poster, "Nipple shields for wages!"
Seriously though, I don't agree with flaunting your breasts at the office. Mainly because it's tacky, but I do get it. I've personally known women who do flaunt and do get ahead. The media is sending a huge mixed message. Employers are sending mixed messages. I'd say women in the office place have bigger issues than nipple shields. This whole issue is basically annoying.
Here's what I propose. I say someone (probably not me) should conduct a study. Say, take 1000 women and make them wear clothing with coverage and nipple shields. Say they take 1000 more women and have them dress a bit sexy.
In two to five years let's find out who makes more money. My money's on the deep cleavage. What do you think?

As always, Jennifer, you make me laugh! I have to agree with you though. The message is very mixed. I guess each individual woman needs to decide how they want to market their individual brand and accept the consequences. It's sad but true that eye candy often gets a promotion over the deserving, conservative female employee.
