If you like the Saarinen Tulip chairs, this year would be a good time to pick some up for the office. Besides sale pricing at various vendors, Knoll is affixing a special 50th anniversary nameplate to all the special edition Saarinen furniture. The duration of the celebration is from now until August 2008.
Also, Knoll is adding a new platinum base finish and reintroducing rosewood and teak tops to both the Tulip chairs and pedestal tables.
Now, I have to be honest, I know Saarinen is a celebrated designer, but I've just never been a fan of the Tulip chair. It's a little too space-age for me. Not organic enough.
But I can see why it's such a proclaimed piece of office furniture. He was one of the few who looked beyond the typical design for his time period. Overall, I like his architectural work better than his chairs.
