The Kensington Contour Roller: Amateurs Need Not Apply

Can I just say; new office supplies and CNET -- smash them together and it doesn't get much better.

Kensington Contour RollerYou know I love office products but I also love CNET. Here's why. They have never steered me wrong. Not once. PDA through them; check. Laptop; check. Cell phone; check. Software; double check.

If you work anywhere on earth that uses technology of any sort, bookmark their informative site. But I digress.

The point is, that CNET released their new review of the Kensington Contour Roller just 2 days ago... So, do the genius minds at CNET think it's a dud or a deal?

You know I'm going to tell you...

Kensington Contour Roller Stats:

Here's what the Kensington site is saying. This roller is approved by the American Chiropractic Association and is ergonomically sound. It's got five stage telescope handles and wheel stability. It's got tried and true SnugFit notebook protection and can reduce shoulder and neck fatigue if you have to carry the bag vs. roll it.

Price:  $100 opening. I did an internet search and found it for less. I'd wager that eventually Amazon or another like minded site will run an even better price.

What CNET Says:

As hinted in the post title, CNET's reporting that this is not the bag for the casual notebook carrier. But, if you are a serious (and heavy) notebook user and need a roller that'll get you where you need to go this bag may be just the ticket.

Weight & Design Stats:

The bag itself weighs 7.4 pounds and can carry a 17-inch laptop along with all the basic accessories including cords and your work files. That's a nice perk. I actually have a Kensington bag (I'll show you sometime) but mine doesn't always fit all the notes and files I need.

If you're a storage freak (me) CNET says, "You do get a massive amount of space to carry all your stuff. On the front of the bag, a double zipper opens to reveal organizer pockets for your MP3 player, smart phone, flash drive, pens, business cards, and discs; there's also a hook for keys, plus several small, zippered pockets for valuables. A narrow zipper pocket above the front flap keeps your boarding pass within easy reach. On one side of the bag, a Velcro panel opens to create a handy holder for a water bottle or an umbrella." WOW. It's an organizing dream.

CNET stuffed this bag full of stuff. They fit, "All our requisite electronics (17-inch laptop, camera, phone, MP3 player) and cords, plus a travel mouse, a thick journal, two full file folders, and a magazine... with room for two extra books we picked up at the library."

So the weight and carry area sounds great.

Motion Stats:

CNET thinks that the movement is good and while it's a little bulky when jammed full they were still able to maneuver it all over the place. Wheel movement got thumbs up for both easy rolling and an almost total lack of noise.

What Was Less Than Good:

CNET found almost nothing wrong with this bag. They mentioned the "somewhat high price" but for the ergonomic safety and the organization it'll bring I don't think the price is so bad. Many places have it for $30 under opening price. 17' notebook bags often go for more.

Here's my concern -- CNET notes that when the handle is pulled up some of your bag's contents are exposed. I don't like bags with any exposed openings anywhere. I have two notebook bags and my favorite (look wise) has these tiny openings that drive me crazy. I worry about rain. I worry about stuff jumping out (I know far fetched). Still that's a personal choice you'd need to consider.

Overall:

Scored an "Excellent" from CNET.

It sounds as if this is going to be the perfect choice for someone with tons of stuff, a large notebook, and places to go.

As much as I love CNET, you never know... If you have one of these bags why not tell me and other readers what you think.
