My clicking finger hurt so bad tonight that I ended up taking some nice Advil. It's lame because I'm typing really slowly and have work to get done.
The positive is that if I'm having some sort of hand or finger pain it's likely due to me doing some sort of computer task incorrectly.
How's that positive? Well, me I can fix if I catch it early enough. You can't always fix everything to your liking at the office but you and your work habits; that's another story.
I spend a good 50% of my life at the computer. I should pay attention to my computer hand ergonomics on a daily, no on a minute basis. You can develop carpal tunnel, trigger finger, and a slew of other unappetizing hand and finger issues if you aren't careful. Seriously. Look at the Hand World website.
After playing back my day in my mind I see what I was doing wrong. I slowly slide the mouse towards the back of my desk as I use it. That means my clicking finger needs to reach just a little bit more outwards to click. Not a good thing. Your mouse should be within super easy reach. If you're stretching your arm out at all to reach your mouse you know that your mouse is too far away.
When I use bad ergonomic techniques I usually like to reward myself with a fun-filled trip to the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) website. One good visit to their eTools on computer workstation safety will kick me into safety gear for at least a week or two. If you're feeling anti-ergonomic pay OSHA a visit. They've got some great slides, checklists, and safety tips that will keep you typing away safely, quickly, and unlike me tonight; pain-free.
