Years ago when I worked on the 15th floor of Royal Centre in downtown Vancouver, the secretary for our group (yes, we had a secretary...that's how long ago it was) always had a full bowl of "help yourself" candy on her desk. I tried to avoid indulging, but didn't always succeed. On those really draggy afternoons when I thought I would fall asleep from low energy levels, I took a handful of Joan's candies to try to perk myself up.
And it worked! For about 20 minutes, that is, until I crashed from the sugar high. Then I felt cranky and even more sluggish.
Today I keep a different kind of pick-me-up in my desk drawer: almonds. Called the "King of Nuts" by the health food nuts, just five almonds give you the protein and vitamins to carry you over to mealtime with energy to spare.
Be good to yourself and get a bag of these nutritious little babies. Buy unroasted and unsalted almonds in the baking goods section at Costco or the bulk foods department of your local grocery store.

I have noticed that too. Whether I had to study or to teach, I had to keep myself from being on an empty stomach because this would automaticlly mean that I wouldn't be able to focus or comprehend what was happening around me!
