Following up on this entry on the impression that your office waiting room reading material gives to clients, and this entry that gives tips for deep discounts on magazine subscriptions, Hippyshopper highlights a magazine with an innovative approach that I think is well worth supporting. GOOD Magazine will donate the full $20 of your one year subscription to your choice of a dozen worthwhile charities. Choices include two of my favorites, the World Wildlife Fund and Unicef.
With intelligent articles on the environment, politics, families and health, GOOD Magazine looks to me to be a cross between The New Yorker and Utne.
Why is GOOD Magazine giving away the subscription money? They say because it’s smart business and they believe in supporting these charities. They go on to explain the smart business part:
...most magazines do not make money on subscriptions or newsstand sales. Traditionally, the best way to get a bunch of new subscribers is to send millions of pieces of unsolicited mail – junk mail – to people who might have some interest. We don't like junk mail, and we don't like the thought of spending millions of dollars on it. So we came up with the idea of giving away all subscription fees and allowing subscribers to choose which organization they would like to support.
I like their innovative approach. If you like it as well, you can subscribe to GOOD and tell your friends.

Potential subscribers beware. I've sent three emails to Good Magazine in an attempt to discover the status of a subscription I bought several weeks ago. No response at all.
Worst. Customer. Service. Ever. And that's not good.
