When I purchased a new Dell computer a few weeks ago, a large McAfee VirusScan pop-up screen was the first thing I saw upon bootup. This ad demanded I activate a free trial. It also concealed most of the other desktop icons. The worst part is that not only did this ad imply that subscribing to McAfee was the logical next step in setting up my computer, it also provided no way to close the pop-up screen. A less experienced computer user would have automatically clicked through and subscribed just to get rid of the darn pop-up.
Of course, McAfee VirusScan was not the only "free trial software" pre-installed on my computer. There were all manner of MSN this and AOL that, along with a dizzying array of media players. All "free trial software" pre-installed on new computers is a real annoyance. I understand why manufacturers do this sort of affiliate marketing, but I don't like it. It takes up space on my hard drive, requiring me to uninstall programs before I even get started. For novice computer users, it's confusing and coercive. Manufacturers, are you listening? I do not want free crap on my new computer.
