If you maintain a customer database, you've probably come across this scenario all too often: you get an ominous looking email from your ISP or your database distribution company telling you that you've been reported for spamming. How can that be, you wonder with alarm... I only send email to people on my squeaky clean, double-opt-in list.
I was really concerned the first time this happened to me. Now I just feel annoyed, because I've learned that some subscribers click "report as spam" when they decide they don't want to be on your list any longer (certain email hosts, such as AOL, have a prominent "report as spam" button on their toolbar).
I don't understand what motivates these subscribers. Do they not understand the difference between "report spam" and "unsubscribe"? Or are they too lazy to scroll to the bottom of the page to click the "unsubscribe" button? Whatever the reason, the effect is the same: I get a black mark against my name, which I definitely don't deserve.
If I was Queen for A Day, I would decree that everyone who opts-in to a newsletter or mailing list must use the "unsubscribe" button instead of the "report as spam" button when they want to leave.
