OfficeStuffer reader Jason Lemkin recently wrote to tell me about his company's free web service at www.echosign.com. It completely automates getting paperwork signed, tracked and filed in either a totally paperless (with e-signatures) or mostly paperless (by digitizing faxes) way.
Intrigued by this idea, I asked Jason about his business model. Specifically, how do they make money if the service is free? He explained:
We monetize it based on the about 5% of our power users than want "Enterprise" accounts. This includes big guys like Brooks-Eckerd, Cisco, Network General, AtRoad - and little guys too (SMB is our largest base). Enterprise accounts offer corporate branding and more importantly, real-time visibility into all the contracts of an entire team (vs. just yourself). So say you are a Director of Sales, you can see all the contracts in realtime of your sales team. Or a Director, Recruiting can see all the offer letters of his/her recruiting team.
But the core service, which automates getting contracts & documents signed, tracked and filed, really is 100% free. You can see lots of happy users here, and on the Echo-Sign blog. The vast majority of which use our free service all the time.
I'm going to try Echo-Sign's free service the next time I need a document signed. I encourage you to give it a try too, and let me know how it works for you.
