Walking through the local mall the other night, I noticed the kiosk for recycled printer cartridges. Refilling printer cartridges seems like a cost effective as well as environmentally friendly thing to do, but I've often wondered about the quality.
Is there any difference between new and recycled cartridges?
According to The Office Guide, the only real difference is price. You'll save at least 50% with a recycled cartridge. There's no discernable difference in the copy quality or longevity of the cartridge, since a recycled cartridge contains as much toner as the new cartridges.
Some manufacturers say you must use their OEM cartridges (OEM stands for "original equipment manufacturer" and refers to cartridges that are made by the same company that makes your brand printer) but I think this is overkill. To be on the safe side, check with a knowledgeable service technician.
