Should I buy a Mac computer? Part 1

It's time for me to buy a new computer.  I've been happy with my HP Pentium 4 for the past three years, but I've started doing quite a bit of video production and I want a more powerful machine.  I suppose I could check into upgrading components on my existing machine, but I'm in a buying mood!

So...video production. That brings up the question that I've managed to sidestep for my entire computer career:

Should I get a Mac?

As you probably know, the general consensus is that Macs trump PCs on two main points:
1) fewer viruses
2) easier video production

And yet, the idea of switching to a new operating system (OS) is a bit scary.  So I'm on a quest to find out whether I'd actually benefit from switching to a Mac.

The first stop on my quest was the HOWDesign forum .  Since this is where professional designers hang out, I figured they'd have some first hand experience to relate.

I learned that the performance gap between Macs and PCs is narrowing quickly.  One user said "Unless there is software you need that is only available on a Mac, I see no reason to get one.  Personally I'd rather have a PC. Costs less, is more flexible in terms of hardware selection and has all the software that I need."

A Mac proponent argued that Macs are more stable (freeze and crash less often) than PCs.  This opinion was countered by someone else who said:

I think that whole stability issue depends on how you treat your computer.  In my experience a [computer] will take care of you if you take care of it. I've been using PCs at home. Everyone complains about popup, spyware, viruses, and all that. But they don't take care of their computer. I almost never run into that problem. I also see people with Macs with maxed out RAM that complain how software that costs them thousands of dollars crashes or is unreliable. Then there is the flipped version of that story. Oh yeah, my old job's shiny new G5 Mac had Quark crash on us p-l-e-n-t-y of times.

Hmmm...sounds like I need to continue on my quest for "the answer".
