I think electronic manufacturers are missing out on a huge market opportunity - the simple gadget.
I can't tell you how many baby boomer and older consumers I talk with who bemoan the plethora of options on their cell phones, digital cameras, remote controls and other electronic gadgets. Options that they either don't understand, or aren't interested in learning, how to use.
My guess is that this issue splits along generational lines. It's folks born pre-computer age who want the simplicity of fewer options. Younger people wouldn't be able to relate, because they've grown up with such equipment.
I'm not saying that complicated equipment is a bad thing, just that there is an overlooked market out there with tons of disposal income who want simplicity.
Personally I would love to have a cell phone that does only three things: send calls, receive calls, and take messages. Oh, and I would like a button to turn of the ringer. But that's it.
If some company came out with such a cell phone I would buy it just on principle alone. But I would use it with pleasure.
What about you? Would you buy simple gadgets if they were available?
