New office furniture can be expensive, both for your budget and for the environment. Before you purchase, ask yourself whether there are more economical and environmentally responsible options available.
Re-furbish
For instance, could your existing office furniture be recovered or refurbished in some way. Those 1970s waiting room chairs may look dated in their current orange vinyl, but if the frames are strong an upholsterer could bring them up-to-date at a reasonable cost. Metal filing cabinets can be spray painted to match your new color scheme, and a coat of paint on anything works wonders. You can even buy melamine paint for updating arborite topped desks and counters.
Re-purpose
Before you purchase new furniture, check your storeroom to see if there's something that can be used. Use your imagination. Just because something isn't called a "desk", doesn't mean it can't be used as such. A flat door placed on pedestal or saw horse type legs can look really sharp. Or even more inventive, use short bookcases turned outward as the supports for your new desk.
Remember, reusing not only makes environmental sense but it saves money too.

People often overlook the fact that they can often repair a faulty part of an office chair inexpensively rather than buy a new chair.
