Lest Dell thinks that I am picking on them, I feel compelled to report that Apple has now recalled 1.8 million batteries. I must say that this burning battery thing is getting so common that it's feeling rather ho hum. But probably the consumers affected would beg to differ.
Like Dell, Apple is not making it easy to find information about the battery problem. Go to their website and there is no mention. You have to know the special address support.apple.com/batteryprogram to go to. Once you get through to customer support (and there were reports of 30 - 45 minute waits in the first days of the recall) you'll be told your new battery will take four to six weeks to arrive.
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission is advising owners of affected computers to remove the battery and use the AC adapter to power the computer until the replacement arrives.
