To be most effective, the workspace should have sufficient space to allow for two monitors. Newer LCD thin monitors come in handy here, since two of these will fit much more easily beside each other than old clunker CRT monitors. Using two of the exact same brand and model of monitor will increase the symmetry and aesthetic flow of the space.
In order to control two computers with one keyboard and one mouse, you will a KVM switch. There are relatively inexpensive KVM switches available, such as the Avocent SwitchView; be sure to get a switch that has inputs that match your peripherals (USB or PS2). Most KVM switches allow you to switch from controlling one computer to another by entering a predefined set of keystrokes. Once you get used to this, you will be able to switch back and forth without thinking about it.
Once you are setup, you will find many advantages to having two PCs and two monitors available to you. Running different applications and displaying different data that you can refer to at once will allow you to increase your productivity and avoid frequent alt-tabbing. Or you may wish to keep your Skype and Instant Messenger open on one PC while you work on another.
