It is interesting that Microsoft has chosen to attach the Office name to this offering. When you first heard the name, you may have thought of web-based versions of the traditional Office programs, such as Word or Excel. Perhaps this will occur in the future, but for now this is not the case.
Regardless of the specific tool, one main advantage to using subscription-based web tools as opposed to the traditional type that you purchase once and install on your desktop is the relatively seamless upgrade path. A back-end push of code to add new features or correct bugs does not require any action by the user, and the advantages are immediately available.
Now that the user interfaces of web-based tools are quickly becoming advanced enough to mimic those of the traditional, specialized and dedicated interface, there are fewer reasons not to consider web-based tools for virtually any type of productivity application. Once Microsoft begins to throw their weight behind web-based applications, there will be even more momentum in that direction.
