Because there is no other office-related software more heavily used or more fundamental than Office, there is always a great deal of anticipation surrounding a major new release. Given the countless hours many of us spend focused on documents within Word, Excel, Powerpoint or Outlook, any changes to the features we have come to depend on will have a major impact.
It's staggering to think of the effect on productivity Microsoft can have, simply by increasing the efficiency of these programs. Improving one minor feature of one program can allow millions of people to be able to get things done more efficiently. Of course, the reverse also holds true: if any features become less efficient, the potential for huge wasting of time is tremendous.
While most of us still rely on the traditional office productivity applications, there is certainly more of a variety of options available than in the past. Web-based productivity software, sold as services rather than licensed software, is growing in popularity. It will be interesting to see how Microsoft addresses these new forms of competitors, and what aspects of their services it adapts.
